Reverend Father Colins Chianakwalam Ekpe, Cm (1971-2018)

Fr. Colins Ignatius Chianakwalam Ekpe, Cm was born on February 01, 1971 to the family of late Ezinna Jerome lbeawuchi Ekpe and Ezinne Appolonia Nwaogazi Ekpe of Umunnabeltu in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA IMO State. He was first child of ten. He attended Oguta primary school from I 976- I 982 and obtained his First School Leaving Certifcate (FSLC). For secondary education, he attended Trinity High School Oguta from 982- I 987 and later Okpofe Secondary School, Okpofe, Ezinihitte Mbaise in 988. With the desire to serve God as a Catholic priest in the way of St. Vincent De Paul, he was admitted for his initial formation as a Postulant in Blessed Ghebre Michael House, Abiakpo Ntak lnyang, Ikot Ekpene LGA, Akwa Ibom State (I989- 1990) Thereafter, he proceeded to St. Justin Internal Seminary, Ogobia, Otukpo Benue State (1990- 1991) for formation in Community life, Spirituality and mission of the Congregation of the Mission(The Vincentians). Further, he was sent to study Philosophy at Seminary, Ikot-Ekpene, an affiliate of Urban University Rome from 1991-1995. He graduated with a Bachelor degree in Philosophy (B.Phil). For his theological formation, he was enrolled in the prestigious Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu (Affiliate of Urban University, Rome) to study Sacred Theology from 1995- I 999 and he obtained a Bachelor degree in Sacred Theology (B.D/B.Th). On September 27, I 998 (Feast of St. Vincent De Paul), he pronounced his vows to God in service of the poor and was incorporated as member of the Congregation of the Mission. He was ordained deacon in December 1998 in his home diocese of Ahiara by Bishop Victor CHIKWE of Blessed Memory. On August 14, I 999 he was ordained a Catholic priest at Joseph Major Seminary Chapel, lkot-Ekpene by His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan (Catholic Archbishop and Metropolitan of Abuja). After his ordination, he was appointed Principal of Mater Del Girls Secondary Scho Oraifite-Ekwusigo L.G.A, Anambra State (1999-2001). Later, he became the Assistant parish priest of St. George's parish Oraifite (200 I -2002). He was further missioned Parrochia lmmacolata Concezione a Galcetello, Prato- Italy. There, he served as assistant parish priest from 2002-2007. Upon his return to Nigeria in September 2007, he was appointed Parish Priest of St. Kizito Catholic parish, Kuje-Abuja Federal Capital Territory. While at St. Kizito parish, Kuje he undertook humanitarian services with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) as a Special Marshal. Also, he assisted the prisoners and the poor in their needs. In addition, he served as Chairperson of the Kuje Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). In 2013, he was sent to DePaul University Chicago, Illinois-USA on further studies. At DePaul University College of Education Chicago, he studied educational leadership and Administration and graduated with Masters' Degree in the said discipline. He was a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Administration when he suddenly died in his rooms at the DePaul Vincentian residence. Fr. Colins loved to read, travel, listen to music and news. Popularly called VOV (Voice of the voiceless), he was great at entertaining the members of his community. VOV, you shocked us at your death. We are missing you! You loved life. We pray God to grant you life in all fullness! Rest in Christ's blessed peace and pray for us!
